In The Sorcerer's Apprentice, Balthazar Blake (Cage) is a master sorcerer in modern-day Manhattan trying to defend the city from his arch-nemesis, Maxim Horvath (Molina). Balthazar can't do it alone, so he recruits Dave Stutler (Baruchel), a seemingly average guy who demonstrates hidden potential, as his reluctant protégé. The sorcerer gives his unwilling accomplice a crash course in the art and science of magic, and together, these unlikely partners work to stop the forces of darkness. It'll take all the courage Dave can muster to survive his training, save the city and get the girl as he becomes "The Sorcerer's Apprentice.
I like Nicholas Cage much better when he plays someone slightly off-kilter, funny, and eccentric. I have high hopes for this movie, and it looks like 2010 will be a good year for Disney epics, with this, and then The Prince of Persia, all leading up to Pirates of the Carribean 4 the following year. Exciting!

This movie looks . . . pretty horrible. It doesn't look as bad as G.I. Joe, but it is coming close. I don't know, I have a hard time getting excited about anything that looks really cheesey. And especially a film directed by Jon Turteltaub. I am surprised that the don't just have Steven Summers direct this. I hope that you have a good time, but I'll pass.
I'm beginning to wonder if you enjoy movies just to enjoy them anymore. I guess it works, with you giving a more analytical view of them, and me giving more of a layman view... but it seems like you're getting away from what's fun about movies. Correct me if I'm wrong, please.
Dude, I am practically the only person in the worlds asking Steven Spielberg to make on Indiana Jones V or a Paramount to make a Mission: Impossible 4.
Most of my movies review grades range around the B area.
I love movies, but sometimes (and remember I don't watch TV so all I see are movies) it seems like every movie is the popcorn film crap every time, and it gets old quick.
Don't get me wrong, I love a guilty pleasure movie - Like Big Trouble in Little China or Judge Dredd or Hard Target. Hell, I even picked up Street Fighter the other day (JVD version) for $3.00 and was happy about it.
But even if I didn't have my BA in Film, I could still tell you that I wouldn't want to see this film. Or like with 2012. I can't stand Independance Day, I hated Godzilla (1998), and I disliked The Patriot. So, I passed on The Day After Tomorrow and 20,000 B.C.
And really, I don't think I am missing anything. So, when I saw a trailer for 2012, I had no intention of seeing it. Had it not been for the group that I was going with, I would have never see 2012. But I did, and I thought it was stupid, just like I suspected it would be.
I love movies, and please believe that I am a movie lover, because I do love a lot of movies. But I do think sometimes that CGI is the death of cinema. It is way over done in most films. I think that filmmakers could make more films that take risks. And so I yawn most times when some really campy, CGI, event film is about to come out.
If my reviews seem analytical, it is because if I don't like a movie I am trying to pin point what about the film that I didn't like so that my opinion on it seems more valid than just saying, "Dumb."
I do think that it is good to have multiple perspectives on one site. And it is healthy to have these discussions. But please, I love movies more than people realize. However, I just don't love every film that Disney and Jon Turtletaub put out.
